![]() The old PC and LE 6.4 is just too flakey and frustrating to use anymore. So, in theory (unless my wife spends the balance ), I've got some $$ left to solve this problem. About $1850 has gone to the Mac/Focusrite. I just added up some gear I sold recently to finance this whole thang, and I banked $3100. Sure, I could upgrade to LE 8 for $150, but what assurance do I have that the computer can handle it and that it would work? My guess is that I'd still have the same problems due to the old crappy PC. I have about 35 cues I need to finish up in PT, and the 'puter keeps crashing, sometimes due to the old P4 processor, sometime due to ?. ProTools LE/Digi 002 would be for recordings of OLD material/works in progress. To make things clearer: Digital Performer on the new Mac/Focusrite combo would be for NEW material. Seems like a "tie" at this point - leaning to DP. THANKS, EVERYONE! I appreciate all the ideas. I don't see why your dp upgrade from a couple years ago wouldn't work, but I'm not familiar with macs. ![]() Imo the only reason to upgrade is for must have features and for obvious benefit, and sometimes it may be the smallest things. If you like the DP sequencer, and there aren't any must have features in the new dp, and can upgrade the protools to your new mac for $150, maybe that's the practical route. I would guess that the difference in DP from back then to now is mucho changes. I'm not familiar with DP, so I don't know of any of the benefit there is if any of having midi and audio together, but if you were asking about cubase, I would go the cubase over the protools, because audio can be treated like midi and everything is integrated better. Pro tools is pc/mac, so I'm not sure but you may have to install the protools on your mac to be eligible for the upgrade, at least you shouldn't have to buy a pc to run the protools, you should be able to run it on the new mac. I don't think you're going to get any breaks on the dp from the 80's sequencer. Looks like since you have an avid product in the digi2000 the upgade is $149.95 (BTW, I'm running 5 other computers/samplers to play back samples, so I'm not worried about that side of things). Problem with current ProTools PC: "CPU running out of power." So, why also buy a new PC to run PT separately (although a LOT cheaper than the iMac), if I choose to run PT on the new iMac? - I'm getting confused just thinking about all the probabilities!!! ![]() One positive for upgrading DP: An amazing vintage Soundcraft board (16 preamps, $4000 when new!), plus the new Focusrite (but I could use that - 8 preamps - with PT as well!). One positive for ungrading PT LE: A $2000 Digi002 which I use all the time. I hate to abandon DP for sequencing, but I'd have to learn recording on it, and visa versa with PT. Yippee! But old software: PT 6.4 & DP 5.something. New gear: Intel i3 iMac & Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 interface. I like 'em both, but mostly sequence, although I've been recording more and more audio lately. ![]() AND, I've used ProTools for mastering and recording audio for about 10 years. "To PT or DP - that is the question!" Here's the deal: I've used Performer for sequencing since the late 80s, and know it inside and out.
